Variables:

Dog AgeDog's actual age in years
Cat AgeCat's actual age in years

Worked Examples

5-year-old dog vs 5-year-old cat

  1. 1. Dog: 15+9+5+5+5 = 39 human years
  2. 2. Cat: 15+9+4+4+4 = 36 human years

Tips & Best Practices

  • Dogs generally age faster than cats after the first 2 years.
  • Indoor cats can live to 20+ years, equivalent to nearly 100 human years.
  • Large dogs age significantly faster than small dogs.
  • Both dogs and cats benefit from regular vet checkups as they age.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Assuming dogs and cats age at the same rate.

After age 2, dogs age about 5-7 human years per year (size-dependent) while cats age about 4 human years per year.

Using the old 7× multiplier for either species.

Neither dogs nor cats follow the simple 7× rule. Both age much faster in the first 2 years, then slow down.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do dogs age faster than cats?
Generally yes, especially larger breeds. A 10-year-old medium dog is about 56 in human years, while a 10-year-old cat is about 56 as well. But large dogs would be older.
Which pet lives longer?
Cats typically live longer: 12-18 years for indoor cats vs 10-13 years for medium dogs. Small dogs (12-16 years) come closest to cat lifespans.
