Cost per Mile$0.125

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Enter trip distance in miles.
  2. 2Enter your vehicle fuel economy (MPG).
  3. 3Enter the current gas price per gallon.
  4. 4View total fuel cost and cost per mile.

Formula Explanation

Total fuel cost is calculated by dividing total distance by MPG to get gallons needed, then multiplying by gas price.

Cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Gas Price

Variables:

DistanceTotal trip distance in miles
MPGVehicle miles per gallon
Gas PricePrice per gallon of fuel

Worked Examples

500-mile trip, 28 MPG, $3.50/gal

  1. 1. Gallons = 500 ÷ 28 = 17.9
  2. 2. Cost = 17.9 × $3.50 = $62.50
Result: Total fuel cost: $62.50

Why Use This Calculator

Tips & Best Practices

  • Check GasBuddy for cheapest gas prices along your route.
  • Highways typically give better MPG than city driving.
  • AC reduces fuel economy by 1-3 MPG on average.
  • Keep tires properly inflated to maximize MPG.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using city MPG for highway driving estimates.

Use the EPA highway rating for road trip calculations, not the combined or city MPG. Highway MPG is typically 5-10 higher.

Not accounting for elevation changes.

Mountain driving can reduce MPG by 10-20%. Add a buffer for routes through hilly terrain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my car's MPG?
Check fueleconomy.gov or your car's window sticker. You can also calculate it by dividing miles driven by gallons used at your last fill-up.
Does speed affect fuel cost?
Yes. Fuel economy drops about 1% for every 1 MPH over 50 MPH. Driving 70 vs 60 can increase fuel costs by 15-20%.
