Total Fuel Cost$62.50
Gallons Needed17.9 gallons
Cost per Mile$0.125
Round Trip Cost$125.00

How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Enter the trip distance in miles.
  2. 2Enter your vehicle fuel economy in MPG.
  3. 3Enter the current fuel price per gallon.
  4. 4View total cost, gallons needed, cost per mile, and round trip cost.

Formula Explanation

Total fuel cost is calculated by dividing trip distance by MPG to get gallons needed, then multiplying by price per gallon.

Cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Price per Gallon

Variables:

DistanceTrip distance in miles
MPGVehicle fuel economy in miles per gallon
PriceCurrent fuel price per gallon

Worked Examples

500 mile trip, 28 MPG, $3.50/gal

  1. 1. Gallons = 500 ÷ 28 = 17.9 gal
  2. 2. Cost = 17.9 × $3.50 = $62.50
Result: $62.50 one-way, $125.00 round trip

Tips & Best Practices

  • Check GasBuddy or similar apps for current gas prices along your route.
  • Highway MPG is typically 20-30% better than city MPG.
  • Factor in altitude changes — mountain driving reduces MPG significantly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using city MPG for a highway trip.

Use your highway MPG rating for mostly highway trips, or an average for mixed driving.

Not accounting for fuel price differences along the route.

Gas prices vary significantly by state and region. Check prices along your route for better estimates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my actual MPG?
Fill your tank, reset the trip odometer, drive normally, then fill up again. Divide miles driven by gallons used. Do this 2-3 times for an accurate average.
Does speed affect fuel economy?
Yes, significantly. Most vehicles are most efficient at 45-65 mph. Above 65, fuel economy drops roughly 1% for each mph due to aerodynamic drag.
