  3. 3. Per person = $78.00 ÷ 2 = $39.00

Tips & Best Practices

  • 20% is considered standard for good service in the US.
  • Quick 20% tip trick: move the decimal left one place and double it ($65 → $6.5 → $13).
  • Tip on the pre-tax amount, not the after-tax total.
  • For large groups (6+), many restaurants add 18-20% gratuity automatically.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Tipping on the post-tax amount.

Calculate your tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Tipping on the tax-inclusive total means you are tipping on sales tax, which slightly inflates the tip.

Not adjusting tip for exceptional or poor service.

15% for adequate service, 20% for good, 25%+ for exceptional. Below 15% sends a message about poor service, but consider speaking to a manager instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a standard tip in the US?
In the US, 15-20% is standard for sit-down restaurants. 20% has become the most common default. For buffets, 10% is acceptable. For delivery, $3-5 or 15-20% (whichever is higher).
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette experts recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal. However, tipping on the post-tax total is common and results in a slightly larger (and appreciated) tip.
