Tips & Best Practices

  • Use percentage change for comparing prices, salaries, or stock values over time.
  • To find a percentage increase, the base number is always the original (older) value.
  • Moving from 50 to 75 is a 50% increase, but moving from 75 to 50 is a 33.3% decrease — percentages are not symmetric.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using the wrong base when calculating percentage change.

Always divide by the ORIGINAL value. Going from $100 to $150 is a 50% increase ($50/$100), not 33%.

Adding percentages directly.

A 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease does NOT bring you back to the original. $100 → $150 → $75.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate percentage change?
Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. For example, going from $80 to $100: ($100-$80)/$80 × 100 = 25% increase.
What is 0% of any number?
0% of any number is always 0. Percentage means "per hundred" — 0 per hundred of anything is nothing.
