How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Enter the room length and width in feet.
  2. 2Enter the wall height (ceiling height).
  3. 3Enter number of doors and windows to subtract.
  4. 4Enter the wallpaper roll width and length.
  5. 5View total rolls needed including waste allowance.

Formula Explanation

Wall area minus openings, divided by the usable area per roll (accounting for pattern repeat waste), gives the number of rolls needed.

Rolls = (Wall Area - Openings) ÷ Usable Area per Roll Wall Area = Perimeter × Height

Variables:

PerimeterTotal wall length around the room
HeightFloor to ceiling height
OpeningsArea subtracted for doors/windows

Worked Examples

12×14 ft room, 8ft ceilings, 2 doors, 2 windows, standard rolls

  1. 1. Perimeter = 2×(12+14) = 52 ft
  2. 2. Wall area = 52 × 8 = 416 sq ft
  3. 3. Subtract openings: 2×21 + 2×15 = 72 sq ft
  4. 4. Net area = 344 sq ft
  5. 5. Standard roll covers ~28 sq ft usable
  6. 6. Rolls = 344 ÷ 28 = 12.3 → 13 rolls
Result: 13 rolls needed (with waste allowance)

Tips & Best Practices

  • Always buy 1-2 extra rolls for mistakes and future repairs.
  • Wallpaper with patterns requires more material due to pattern matching.
  • Order all rolls from the same batch/lot number to ensure color consistency.
  • Measure twice before ordering — returns on opened rolls are rarely accepted.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Not accounting for pattern repeat waste.

Patterned wallpaper can waste 15-25% of each roll for pattern matching. Add at least 10-15% extra to your order.

Measuring only one wall and multiplying by 4.

Rooms are rarely perfect squares. Measure each wall separately and calculate total perimeter for accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does one roll of wallpaper cover?
A standard US single roll covers about 36 sq ft, with usable coverage of about 28 sq ft after trimming. European rolls are typically wider and longer.
Should I buy extra wallpaper rolls?
Yes! Buy 1-2 extra rolls from the same dye lot. You may need them for mistakes during hanging or future repairs. Pattern-matched wallpaper uses more material.
