Tips & Best Practices

  • A 3.0 GPA (B average) is typically the minimum for good academic standing.
  • Higher-credit courses have more impact on your GPA.
  • Dean's List typically requires a 3.5+ GPA.
  • Retaking a course may replace the old grade in your GPA calculation at some schools.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Using unweighted averages instead of credit-weighted GPA.

A 4-credit A has more impact than a 3-credit A. Always use credit-weighted calculation.

Not knowing the grade point values at your school.

Most US colleges use the standard 4.0 scale, but some use different scales or +/- variations. Check your school's grading policy.
