How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Enter your current grade before the final exam.
  2. 2Enter your target overall grade.
  3. 3Enter the weight of the final exam.
  4. 4View the minimum score needed on the final.

Formula Explanation

This calculator works backwards from your target grade to determine the required final exam score, given your current grade and the final's weight.

Needed = (Target - Current × (1 - FinalWeight)) ÷ FinalWeight

Variables:

CurrentYour current grade before the final (%)
TargetThe overall grade you want to achieve (%)
FinalWeightHow much the final exam counts (as a decimal)

Worked Examples

Current: 85%, Target: 90%, Final weight: 30%

  1. 1. Needed = (90 - 85×0.70) / 0.30
  2. 2. = (90 - 59.5) / 0.30
  3. 3. = 30.5 / 0.30 = 101.7%
Result: You need 101.7% on the final — extremely difficult but potentially possible with extra credit

Current: 78%, Target: 80%, Final weight: 40%

  1. 1. Needed = (80 - 78×0.60) / 0.40
  2. 2. = (80 - 46.8) / 0.40 = 83%
Result: You need 83% on the final to get a B

Tips & Best Practices

  • If you need over 100%, consider whether extra credit is available.
  • Sometimes a lower target grade is more realistic — an 89% (B+) may be achievable while a 90% (A-) might not be.
  • Talk to your professor about grade rounding policies.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Forgetting that the final replaces the current grade weight.

Your current grade represents (1 - final weight) of the total. A 30% final means your current work accounts for 70%.

Not factoring in extra credit opportunities.

Ask your professor about extra credit or grade rounding. Some professors round 89.5% up to 90%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I need over 100% on the final?
It is mathematically impossible to get a score over 100% (unless extra credit is offered). In this case, your target grade is not achievable — consider a lower target.
How much does the final typically count?
College finals typically count for 20-40% of the total grade. Some courses weight finals as high as 50%.
