Understanding the Mulch Calculator
A mulch calculator determines how much mulch you need to cover a garden bed to a chosen depth, in cubic yards or bags. Proper mulch depth retains soil moisture, suppresses weeds, and protects plant roots without smothering them.
Depth is the key variable
Mulch is applied by volume, so the calculator multiplies your bed’s area by the desired depth. A layer of about 2–4 inches is ideal for most beds — enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture, but not so deep that it blocks water or suffocates roots. Deeper is not always better.
Bulk vs. bags
For large areas, buying mulch in bulk by the cubic yard is usually far cheaper than bagged mulch, though bags are convenient for small jobs and easier to transport. The calculator gives both so you can compare. Keep mulch a few inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot.
