Tire Size Comparison: What Changes When You Go Bigger?

The real-world effects of upsizing your tires — ground clearance, speedometer error, fuel economy, handling, and whether it's worth it.

Bigger tires look aggressive, add ground clearance, and can improve off-road capability. But they also introduce tradeoffs that many drivers don't anticipate until after the purchase. Before you upsize, here's exactly what changes — the good, the bad, and the numbers.

What "Going Bigger" Actually Means

There are two ways to go bigger:

  • Plus-sizing (bigger wheels, same overall diameter): Larger wheel + lower-profile tire. Example: going from 215/60R16 to 225/50R17. Overall height stays similar, but the tire is wider with a shorter sidewall.
  • Upsizing (larger overall diameter): Bigger wheel AND taller tire. Example: going from 265/70R17 to 285/75R17. This is what most truck/SUV owners do for off-road capability or appearance.

Ground Clearance

Increasing overall tire diameter by 1 inch adds approximately 0.5 inches of ground clearance (half the diameter increase goes below the axle). A 2-inch diameter increase = roughly 1 inch more clearance. This can be meaningful for off-road driving, but a lift kit is more effective for significant clearance gains.

Speedometer Error

This is the most commonly overlooked consequence. A larger tire covers more ground per revolution, so your speedometer reads slower than your actual speed. For example, going from a 28" to a 31" overall diameter tire means when your speedometer reads 60 mph, you're actually traveling about 66 mph. That's a potential speeding ticket waiting to happen. Fuel Economy Impact

Larger tires hurt fuel economy in three ways:

  • Weight: Heavier tires require more energy to accelerate and decelerate. A set of 33" tires can weigh 15–25 lbs more per tire than stock.
  • Rolling resistance: Wider contact patches create more friction.
  • Aerodynamics: Larger tires can disrupt airflow, especially on vehicles not designed for them.

Handling and Braking

  • Plus-sizing (shorter sidewall, wider tire) generally improves handling — less sidewall flex means more responsive steering
  • Upsizing (taller overall diameter) generally reduces handling precision — more sidewall flex, higher center of gravity
  • Braking: Larger, heavier tires increase rotational mass, which can slightly increase stopping distances
  • Ride comfort: Shorter sidewalls = harsher ride. Taller sidewalls = softer ride.

Gearing Effects

A larger tire effectively changes your gear ratio. The engine has to work harder at low speeds (reduced acceleration) but cruises at lower RPM on the highway (quieter, potentially better highway fuel economy). The 3% Rule
