Not every room is a perfect rectangle, and measuring irregular rooms can be confusing. Whether you need square footage for flooring, painting, or real estate purposes, these methods make it easy to calculate any room shape.
The Divide-and-Conquer Method
The simplest approach for any irregular room: divide it into rectangles, calculate each one, and add them together.
L-Shaped Rooms 1. Divide the L into two rectangles 2. Measure each rectangle's length and width 3. Calculate area for each (L × W) 4. Add them together
Example: An L-shaped room that is 15' × 12' on one section and 8' × 10' on the other: = (15 × 12) + (8 × 10) = 180 + 80 = 260 sq ft
T-Shaped Rooms Same principle — divide into two or three rectangles and sum them.
Rooms with Alcoves or Bay Windows 1. Measure the main room as a rectangle 2. Measure the alcove separately 3. Add the areas together
Rooms with Angles
For rooms with angled walls: 1. Create a bounding rectangle around the room 2. Calculate the rectangle area 3. Calculate and subtract the corner triangles
Triangle area = (Base × Height) ÷ 2
Rooms with Curves
For rooms with curved walls (bay windows, turrets): 1. Approximate the curve as a half-circle or quarter-circle 2. Use the formula: Half-circle area = (π × r²) ÷ 2
Subtracting Obstacles
Remember to subtract areas you DON'T need to cover: - Fireplaces: Measure the hearth area - Built-in closets: Measure the floor area - Staircases: Measure the stairwell opening - Islands (for flooring): Measure the base area
Pro Tips for Accurate Measurements
- Use a laser measure — Much more accurate and easier than a tape measure for long distances
- Measure twice — Check each measurement at least once
- Draw a sketch — A rough floor plan with measurements helps prevent mistakes
- Measure in feet and inches — Convert everything to feet (inches ÷ 12) before calculating
- Add 10% for waste — Especially important when ordering flooring or materials
Quick Conversion: Square Feet to Square Yards
Square yards = Square feet ÷ 9
This is useful when buying carpet, which is priced per square yard.
