A carpet calculator estimates how much carpet you need to cover a room, including the extra for seams, pattern matching, and waste. Carpet is sold in fixed widths, so smart planning minimizes the offcuts you pay for but cannot use.
Roll width affects waste
Carpet typically comes in standard roll widths (often 12 feet), so a room that does not divide neatly into that width generates waste. The calculator factors in the room dimensions and roll width to estimate the total area you must buy, which is usually more than the room’s bare square footage.
Seams, direction, and padding
Large rooms may need seams, which should be planned away from high-traffic and high-visibility areas, and the carpet’s pile direction should run consistently. Don’t forget padding and tack strips, which are separate purchases. Add a waste allowance, and order from one dye lot for consistent color.
