Tips & Best Practices

  • The "8 glasses a day" rule is a rough approximation — actual needs vary.
  • You get about 20% of daily water from food.
  • Dark yellow urine indicates dehydration.
  • Drink before you feel thirsty — thirst means you are already mildly dehydrated.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Waiting until thirsty to drink.

Thirst is a late indicator of dehydration. Drink water consistently throughout the day, especially before and after exercise.

Drinking too much water too quickly.

Hyponatremia (water intoxication) is rare but dangerous. Spread intake throughout the day — don't drink a gallon all at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much water should I drink daily?
General guideline: half your body weight in ounces. A 160-lb person needs about 80 oz (10 cups). Add more for exercise and hot weather.
Does coffee count toward water intake?
Yes, moderate coffee and tea consumption counts toward daily fluid intake. While caffeine has a mild diuretic effect, the net hydration is still positive.
