How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Choose whether you want to know when to wake up or when to go to bed.
  2. 2Enter your bedtime or wake-up time using the hour, minute, and AM/PM selectors.
  3. 3The calculator shows optimal times based on completing 4, 5, or 6 full sleep cycles.

Formula Explanation

Sleep occurs in 90-minute cycles. Waking at the end of a complete cycle (rather than mid-cycle) helps you feel refreshed. The calculator adds 15 minutes for falling asleep.

Wake Time = Bed Time + 15 min (fall asleep) + (90 min × Number of Cycles)

Variables:

Bed TimeThe time you plan to go to sleep
15 minAverage time to fall asleep
90 minDuration of one complete sleep cycle

Worked Examples

Going to bed at 11:00 PM

  1. 1. Fall asleep by 11:15 PM
  2. 2. 5 cycles = 7.5 hours
  3. 3. Wake time = 11:15 PM + 7h 30m = 6:45 AM
Result: Best wake-up time: 6:45 AM (5 cycles)

Why Use This Calculator

  • Wake up feeling refreshed instead of groggy.
  • Based on actual sleep science and circadian rhythm research.

Tips & Best Practices

  • 5-6 complete sleep cycles (7.5-9 hours) is optimal for most adults.
  • Maintain consistent sleep and wake times, even on weekends.
  • Avoid screens 30-60 minutes before your calculated bedtime.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Setting an alarm in the middle of a sleep cycle.

Use this calculator to align your alarm with the end of a complete cycle.

Assuming everyone needs exactly 8 hours.

Sleep needs vary. Some adults thrive on 7 hours (5 cycles), others need 9 hours (6 cycles).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I feel tired after 8 hours of sleep?
8 hours does not align with complete 90-minute cycles (7.5 hours = 5 cycles, 9 hours = 6 cycles). You may be waking mid-cycle, which causes grogginess.
Is it better to get 6 hours or 7.5 hours?
7.5 hours (5 complete cycles) is generally better for health and cognitive function. However, 6 hours (4 cycles) will feel more refreshing than 7 hours if you wake mid-cycle.
