How to Use This Calculator

  1. 1Select your gender.
  2. 2Enter your height in inches.
  3. 3View ideal weight estimates from four different medical formulas instantly.

Formula Explanation

Four well-known formulas are used to estimate ideal body weight (IBW). All are based on height and gender. They were originally developed for drug dosing but are widely used for weight goals.

Robinson (1983): Men = 52 + 1.9×(inches over 60) Women = 49 + 1.7×(inches over 60) Miller (1983): Men = 56.2 + 1.41×(inches over 60) Women = 53.1 + 1.36×(inches over 60)

Variables:

inches over 60Number of inches of height over 5 feet (60 inches)

Worked Examples

Male, 5'10" (70 inches)

  1. 1. Inches over 60 = 10
  2. 2. Robinson: 52 + 1.9(10) = 71 kg = 156 lbs
  3. 3. Miller: 56.2 + 1.41(10) = 70.3 kg = 155 lbs
Result: Ideal weight range: 150–160 lbs depending on formula

Female, 5'5" (65 inches)

  1. 1. Inches over 60 = 5
  2. 2. Robinson: 49 + 1.7(5) = 57.5 kg = 127 lbs
  3. 3. Devine: 45.5 + 2.3(5) = 57 kg = 126 lbs
Result: Ideal weight range: 123–130 lbs depending on formula

Why Use This Calculator

  • Compares four well-established medical formulas in one place.
  • Gives a range rather than one number, acknowledging individual variation.
  • Useful for setting realistic weight loss or fitness goals.
  • Helps healthcare providers calculate medication dosages.

Tips & Best Practices

  • Use the range of all four formulas rather than fixating on one number.
  • Frame size (small, medium, large) can shift ideal weight by ±10%.
  • Muscle mass, body composition, and fitness goals should also be considered.
  • These formulas were developed for average body types and may not suit everyone.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Treating ideal weight as a single exact number.

View the results as a healthy range — a 10–15 lb window is normal.

Ignoring body composition when evaluating ideal weight.

A muscular person may weigh more than the formula suggests and still be very healthy.

Using ideal weight formulas for children or growing teenagers.

These formulas are designed for adults only. Pediatric growth charts are more appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?
The Robinson formula (1983) is most commonly cited, but no single formula is definitively "best." Each was developed from different populations. Using the average of all four gives the most balanced estimate.
Does frame size affect ideal weight?
Yes. People with larger bone structures naturally weigh more. You can estimate frame size by wrapping your thumb and middle finger around your wrist — if they overlap, you have a small frame; if they touch, medium; if not, large.
Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?
Not exactly. Ideal weight formulas give a mathematical estimate. Healthy weight also depends on body composition, fitness level, genetics, and medical history. A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is the standard healthy range.
Why do the four formulas give different results?
Each formula was developed using different study populations and methods. Robinson and Miller were published in 1983, Devine in 1974, and Hamwi in 1964. Differences of 5–10 lbs between formulas are normal.
Should I aim for my ideal weight?
Use ideal weight as a general guide, not an absolute target. Focus on overall health markers like blood pressure, cholesterol, energy levels, and how you feel rather than hitting one specific number.
